It's Trico Mayfly Time - Are You Ready to Match the Hatch?
While all hatches are measurable and predictable, there is no hatch as punctual as the Fall's Trico Mayfly hatch. Over the years we've been able to collect enough data and build our invertebrate database to the point that we can layout a fly selection for the Trico hatch down to the half an hour of the day! While the male Tricos hatch in the evening, the real action starts when the sun rises in the morning and the female Tricos hatch. Few hatches are as prolific as the Trico hatch and the trout actively target and gorge on these little mayflies at every stage of the hatch.
Set your watch and tie on these patterns for your most productive Fall on the River !
(This timing is based on an elevation of 9,500 feet, for 8,500' the hatch should start and end 1 hour sooner, for 7,000' and below the hatch should start and end 2 hours earlier)
- Dawn to 7:30 am - Trico Nymphs are active along the bottom of the river (Fish Black Pheasant tails, Grey/black juju baetis, & skinny nelsons in size 22).
- 7:30 - 8:30 am - The Trico nymphs leave the bottom of the river and frantically swim to the surface of the river, trout aggressively feed on both the emerging nymphs (fish black greg's emergers and Sparkle wing RS2s in size 20-22). At the surface of the river, the small tricos struggle to break through the surface of the water as they enter the first dry life cycle: the dun mayfly (Fish Trico Sparkle Dunsand Parachute Trico Emergers in size 22)
- 8:30 - 9:30 am - The fully emerged mayfly duns drift down the river until they head into the streamside vegetation and hatch a second time into their spinner life cycle (Fish Parachute Tricos in size 18-22).
- 9:30 - 11:30 am - The Trico spinners swarm over the water and mate in flight. Immediately after the mating swarm, tens of thousands of Trico spinners fall dead on the water and into the jaws of the waiting trout (Fsh Matt's Lead Trico Spinners and Matt's Hi-Vis Tricos in size 18-22).
We can't make it any easier than this to match the hatch! Tie it on and trust us! You are going to have a great fall!
