There is plenty of overlap here. Fish have stubbornly refused to organize themselves according to fly-rod manufacturers' line-weight charts, so conditions matter just as much as species.

Take your favorite soft trout rod onto a windy Caribbean flat and you may quickly discover why saltwater rods are built differently.

In many saltwater situations, you need to generate high line speed quickly.

A guide may spot a permit at 50 feet and give you only seconds to make the cast. There may be a 15-knot wind coming across your casting shoulder. Your fly may contain enough feathers, synthetic fiber, lead eyes, and optimism to resemble a small wet chicken.
