Fly fishing has a wonderful way of making fairly simple things appear complicated.

Someone hands you a rod.

There is a reel attached to it.

You tie on an artificial fly.

How hard could this possibly be?

Then somebody mentions backing, leaders, tippet, double hauls, reach casts, drag-free drifts, Blue Winged Olives, Euro leaders, aerial mends, and twelve different knots—and suddenly you've wandered into what appears to be a graduate-level course taught in another language.

You can absolutely teach yourself to fly fish.

Many of us did.

We also spent years developing bad casting habits, buying equipment we didn't need, fishing the wrong water, and repeatedly throwing the wrong fly at trout that were probably discussing us among themselves.

A good fly fishing class simply shortens the learning curve.

Where Should a Beginner Start?

If you've never fly fished before, start with the basics.

Our Intro to Fly Fishing Class is designed to demystify the equipment, vocabulary, rigging, knots, and casting that can make the sport seem intimidating from the outside.

You don't need to arrive knowing the difference between 4X and 5X.

You don't need your own secret collection of vintage bamboo rods.

And you certainly don't need to look like Brad Pitt in A River Runs Through It.

You just need to want to learn.

Once the basics make sense, everything else becomes much easier.

A rod becomes a tool rather than an object you're afraid to assemble incorrectly.

A leader becomes understandable.

And the collection of feathers hanging from hooks in the fly shop starts looking slightly less like somebody exploded a craft store.

Learn to Fly Cast: 201, 202 & 203

Casting is the delivery system for everything else we do.

You can have the right fly.

Perfect leader.

Ideal water temperature.

A trout rising exactly where you predicted.

But if the fly lands six feet behind you in a willow tree, our carefully constructed biological strategy has encountered a small logistical problem.

Euro nymphing can be tremendously productive, but buying a 10-foot rod and some tungsten jig flies does not automatically turn anyone into a competitive nymphing assassin.
