Build Your Own Fly Rod: Because the Best Rod in Your Collection Might Be the One You Build Yourself!

There is something magical about a fly rod.

A slender length of graphite, a few carefully positioned guides, a cork handle, and a reel seat somehow come together to create a tool capable of delivering a size 22 dry fly to a rising trout or battling a twenty-inch brown determined to wrap your tippet around every submerged log in the river.

But have you ever stopped to wonder what actually goes into building that rod?

Better yet, have you ever imagined building one yourself?

At Ascent Fly Fishing, our custom fly rod building classes invite you to step behind the curtain of rod manufacturing and become the craftsman. Under the instruction of professional rod builder Steve Vaggalis, you'll learn how the individual components of a fly rod work together before assembling your very own custom creation.

And unlike that questionable woodworking project from seventh grade, this is something you'll actually want to show your friends!

What Will You Learn in a Fly Rod Building Class?

Building a fly rod is a fascinating combination of engineering, craftsmanship, and artistic expression.

Every component contributes something to the finished product. The graphite blank determines much of the rod's action and performance. The guides influence how the line travels along the rod. The cork grip and reel seat contribute to comfort, balance, and appearance.

And the decorative thread wraps?

That's where you get to show a little personality!

During Ascent's hands-on fly rod building workshop, you'll learn about rod components, construction tools, and materials before being guided through the process of assembling your own rod.

You'll work with the elements that make a finished fly rod both functional and beautiful, including graphite rod blanks, cork grips, reel seats, stripping guides, snake guides, thread wraps, and finishing materials.

By the time your rod is finished, you'll have a much deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship hidden beneath the glossy finish of every fly rod you've ever cast.

Choose the Fly Rod You Want to Build

One of the great advantages of building your own fly rod is that you're not limited to whatever combination of components a manufacturer decided to put on the shelf.

Ascent offers two custom rod building packages.

Base Fly Rod Building Package — $549

The Base Package provides an excellent introduction to custom rod building while producing a high-performance fly rod. Choose from several rod lengths and weights, including a 7'6" 3-weight, 8' 4-weight, 9' 5-weight, or 9' 6-weight.

Your package includes a quality graphite rod blank, hardwood reel seat insert, aluminum reel seat, AAA-grade cork grip, chrome stripping guides, thread color options, rod label, rod sock, and aluminum rod tube.

Premium Fly Rod Building Package — $749

For anglers looking to create something particularly special, the Premium Package includes a high-performance 9' 5-weight graphite blank with upgraded components.

You'll work with a decorative AAA-grade cork grip, hardwood burl reel seat insert, dual-locking aluminum reel seat, and beautiful agate and sterling stripping guides.

An agate stripping guide isn't merely functional hardware. With its natural color and polished stone appearance, it can turn an already beautiful rod into something that looks like it belongs in a display case.

Although we'd strongly recommend taking it fishing instead!

Both packages include the tools and materials needed for the class.

How Long Does It Take to Build a Custom Fly Rod?

A fine fly rod isn't assembled during a coffee break.

Ascent's rod building course takes place over two evenings and one Sunday morning, with approximately 3–3.5 hours of instruction per session.

Participants also complete some rod building work between classes.

To ensure everyone receives individual attention, each class is limited to five participants.

That small-group format gives you the opportunity to ask questions, learn proper techniques, and receive guidance as your custom rod takes shape.

Why Build Your Own Fly Fishing Rod?

There are plenty of excellent factory-built fly rods available. In fact, Ascent carries freshwater and saltwater fly rods from respected manufacturers.

So why build one?

Because there is something uniquely satisfying about catching a fish on a rod you assembled with your own hands.

Imagine standing knee-deep in a Rocky Mountain trout stream, watching a large brown trout rise beneath an overhanging willow. You make the cast, your dry fly disappears, and the rod comes alive in your hands.

Except this isn't just another fly rod.

You selected the blank. You chose the cork grip and reel seat. You wrapped the guides and helped bring the entire thing together.

You know the rod in a way you never could have known one pulled straight from a factory tube.

And if you ask us, that makes every fish caught on it just a little more special.

A Great Gift for the Fly Fisher Who Already Has Everything

We all know that angler.

They have nine fly rods, seven reels, enough fly boxes to outfit a small expedition, and a garage that looks suspiciously like a fly shop.

What do you buy someone who already owns everything?

How about the experience of building something they've never owned before?

A custom fly rod building class makes a memorable gift for an experienced fly fisher, an enthusiastic beginner, or a family member who enjoys working with their hands.

It's also an opportunity to learn a new hobby that can continue long after the first rod is finished.

Fair warning: building your first fly rod may create an irresistible urge to build a second.

And a third.

Fly anglers have never been particularly famous for exercising restraint when it comes to collecting rods.

Why Take a Fly Rod Building Class at Ascent Fly Fishing?

Learning to build a fly rod from online videos is certainly possible, but there is a difference between watching someone wrap a guide on a screen and having an experienced rod builder show you how to do it correctly.

At Ascent, you'll benefit from hands-on instruction, a small class size, quality components, and assistance selecting the right rod for your fishing.

Whether your dream rod is a delicate 3-weight for small mountain streams or a versatile 5-weight for Colorado trout fishing, the goal is the same: build a fly rod that matches your waters, your fishing style, and your personality.

And once your rod is finished, Ascent can help you complete the setup with the right fly reel, fly line, leader, and selection of flies.

Because a custom rod deserves to spend considerably more time on the river than it does hanging above your fireplace.

Your Next Favorite Fly Rod Is Waiting to Be Built!

Every fly rod has a story.

Some begin in a factory halfway around the world. Others are handed down from fathers, grandfathers, and friends who taught us to love the water.

But a rod you build yourself begins with your own two hands.

Years from now, when the cork has darkened from hundreds of days on the water and the rod tube has collected its share of scratches, you'll still remember choosing the components, wrapping the guides, and making those first casts.

Book your custom fly rod building class with Ascent Fly Fishing and discover the satisfaction of fishing a rod you built yourself!
