Some Favorite Fishing Momentsfrom the Ascent Community
Picture of 4-Year-Old Peter with his fishing game face on!
It was almost 70 degrees last Saturday when I was fishing, midges were in the air, and my spring fever was real! However, with up to 4-feet of snow in the forecast for this weekend, I thought this might be a good opportunity to share some favorite fishing memories from the Ascent Fly Fishing community as we rivers refill and wait for the final days of winter to pass. May the good memories of times spent together on the water, and 4 feet of heavy March snow be the foundation for many new adventures and memories shared on the water this season!
Learning to Tie Flies

"When I was a kid, we would journey from southern California to my grandparents in San Luis Obispo California for Christmas. The Christmas of my tenth year I unwrapped Christmas morning a fly tying kit. The joy and mystery of fly fishing began that Christmas.
That was 64 years ago. The grandparents and the house are, of course, gone. But the joy and mystery still remain.
In those days there was no internet, YouTube, or even many books available to anyone. The kit came with an instruction book. However, a lot of the lingo was foreign to me. I clearly remember the formula for one fly requiring a hackle (what was a hackle?) Iron Blue Dun in color. What was Iron Blue Dun? Off to the dictionary, I went. Nothing! And no one to ask.
The kit did not come with a bobbin, so I wound the thread on the hook by holding it in my fingers. Needless to say, my initial efforts looked like a fly that had exploded.
The years passed but not the passion. Eventually, some of the mystery resolved. Today, I still tie and fish."

" I was fishing with my young son on a state lake southeast Pa. We camped at the state park and canoe-fished but didn't have much luck in two days. As we were paddling back to the campsite to wrap up the trip I saw what looked like a truck pumping stuff into the lake. We paddled over and discovered they were restocking the lake with trout. We caught and released until we had to go. I told my young son on the way home not to expect that whenever we go fishing!"
