Nothing says "I Love You" like a fly box full of Jujubaetis!

Of all the 611 mayfly species found across North America, the genus of baetis, better known to the fly fisher as Blue Winged Olives or BWOs, is the MOST IMPORTANT! Here are the reasons that the BWO is a 4-season favorite of trout and is a must have in every fly fisher's fly box.

  1. BWOs LIVE EVERYWHERE - Found in 48 states, the BWO is a tried and true trout staple in almost any river, stream, or creek where trout live.
  2. There are a TON OF BWOs in the river year-round - When sampling different rivers across the US, I've recorded densities of over 1,200 nymphs per square meter on the bottom of some rivers. While varying in hook size from 18-20 in the spring and summer, and 22-24 in the fall and winter, what this family lacks in size they more than make up for in quantity!
  3. They are ALWAYS AVAILABLE to feeding trout - BWO nymphs are a "swimming type" mayfly and actively move through the water column instead of clinging to the underside of rocks on the bottom of the river. While this active lifestyle enables the BWOs to find better food and habitat, it also regularly puts them in front of feeding trout cruising the bottom of the river.
