Like a Biblical Plague, the Blue Winged Olives are Here!

Like a Biblical Plague, the Blue Winged Olives are Here!

While there are a number of hatches starting to dimple the surfaces of rivers across the United States, none are more important or eagerly greeted by trout as the Blue Winged Olive Mayfly (BWO) hatch! Found in 48 of the 50 US states and all of Canada, the BWO hatch is as regular as clockwork on trout streams coast to coast. The spring hatch of the BWO varies in hook size from 18-20 March - May, and can be hatching regularly at high elevations as late as July. While 18-20 size hooks might sound like a pain to tie on for some anglers, these mayflies seem huge to the trout who have been stuck feeding on size 22-28 midges and mayfly nymphs through most of the winter!

Look for water temps to rise and hold above 48 degrees F each afternoon to trigger this hatch, and be ready with the Parachute BWO & Hi-Vis Parachute BWO for some of the first (and best) dry fly action of the year!
