Probably the most popular and functional terrestrial insect, and the star of the "Hopper - Dropper" rig (or Hank Patterson's "Hopper Dropper with a Dropper Hopper" rig), grasshoppers are a must-have pattern that can produce explosive strikes from feeding trout.
Grasshopper patterns are best fished late spring through the fall on windy days. Take note of the size of the naturals hopping around your feet on the way to the river and try to get close in size and color.
