Cousins of scud and freshwater shrimp, the sow bug ban be best described as an underwater roly poly. While these tasty trout treats are common in a number of lakes and rivers across the country, their numbers can reach epic proportions in waters such as the Big Horn River in Montana, the Wind River in Wyoming, and the White River in Arkansas, making them a must-have pattern in every angler's fly box.
In addition to an added spark of color to catch the trout's attention, the beadhead provides vital weight to help this pattern sink quickly into the zone where fish like to hold.

a reliable dropper
This is one of my go-to droppers. I tend to have a dry fly tied on above this one and sometimes add floatant to help the bead not sink so quickly to avoid the shoreline weeds. I caught three rainbow trout last weekend with this from the "Crystal Lakes" near Leadville, Colo. (fish early in the morning!). But I discovered this dropper last fall and had good luck with it in Clear Creek Canyon above Golden, Colo.
